Joey developed his passion for plants and design as a boy growing up in the family business. His late mother was a great influence on him. Not only did she pass on very creative genes, but as an artist and garden designer and taught him valuable techniques. He went on to hone his design and horticultural skills at Temple University, where he studied design for a semester in Rome and graduated Cum Laude earning a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture. During his time at Temple, he was awarded the Jane Martin Memorial Award for design and received the American Society of Landscape Architects’ prestigious Certificate of Honor for Excellence in the Study of Landscape Architecture.
While he studied in Rome he had the opportunity to travel Italy extensively to study the gardens and landscapes. His studies in Italy span over 2000 years of garden, art and architectural history; an invaluable resource of knowledge he uses in his work today. He also draws inspiration from his extensive travels in North America and Europe.
Joey has been working with the family firm for over a decade. Although he spends all of his time at the drawing board today, he has practical, hands-on experience in most aspects of the firm. Cutting stone, laying walks, planting shrubs, diagnosing plant diseases and digging trees in the nursery are not foreign tasks for Joey. This practical experience has given him the ability to accurately estimate the most complicated projects, keeping them on budget.
In addition to travel, Joey enjoys fly fishing, family time with his wife and two boys. Taking his little boys for rides in a 1964 Ford pick-up truck he recently restored with his brother and father, is a weekend highlight. Joey’s next top three travel destinations are Versailles Palace in France, Alaska and North Carolina’s Biltmore Estate. (Back to STAFF Page)
